The midterm project for my UX 2 class was to pick a business or service and design an interface that could be useful to the user of the service or the business itself. The Service: The Brentwood Club, an independently owned Jiu Jitsu gym. After interviewing the gym owner and one of their instructors we concluded the problem: The Gym’s casual nature lacks training structure and motivation that contribute to member retention and acquisition. Our solution was to create Grapple Guide, a video app for Jiu Jitsu students to view and manage videos of move demos and their own progress. We wanted to potentially find an effective way to track a student’s progress which would help them visualize how close they are to moving up a belt class, by allowing them to figure out how many moves they’ve mastered. The user would also be able to see the gym’s information like available classes and instructors.
